IS YOUR BRAND TALKING SHIT?

If you exist offering a product or service, you have a brand. That brand is telling the world things about you, whether intentional or not.

Let’s get into it.

Take a moment to look at these three logos. What assumptions have you made about each one?

I mean it...really think about them. What do you think they charge? What sort of hair styles are they known for? What kind of products do they use? What is the skill level of the stylists? If you had to choose between them, which place would you visit?

Three very different logos side by side for a business with the same name

Here’s the back story behind each one. Let’s see if you got those same vibes from just looking at them.

BUSINESS 01
Logo featuring the business name in a brush script font with a peach colored abstract shape behind it.

This Lumina Hair Salon is an in-home business. They offer friendly, affordable, and convenient hair care services within the local community.

BUSINESS 02
Business logo with a sleek, modern typeface and a natural, organic symbol above it. The colors are very earthy greens.

This Lumina hair salon is a luxurious, eco-friendly business. They believe in minimizing their impact on the environment by using only organic and natural products.

BUSINESS 03
Business logo with a bright bold orange background with a thick, bold, black typeface.

This Lumina hair salon is a modern, trendy business. They are the destination for cutting-edge and innovative styles using advanced techniques.

How did this align with the assumptions you had? Did they tell you the backstory without you realizing it?

WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?

Business 01's logo was made in Canva for free. You might have even recognized it because it’s an incredibly popular style for people to use. The problem with using Canva is that generally....it looks like you used Canva.

This logo didn’t have a whole lot of strategy put into it but it was better than having nothing. And those are the exact vibes it gives off too.

This business owner would have a hard time charging a luxury price for their service - even if their skill level was on par with the luxury salons.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY?

Business 02 and 03 had very specific brand values they wanted to convey.

The earthy logo from above but now with values written next to it: sustainability, health and wellness, transparency, personalized care, and education.

The bold logo from above but now with the brand values written next to it: trendsetting, innovation, creativity, transformative, and modern.

With just a logo and two colors, we were able to capture these brands very different values and communicate so much about them. Imagine how much more we could say with a full branding package.

No matter what you do, your brand is talking about you.

If you don't shape what it says, it might be talking shit.
